All-Star Organization: The Palmer Home for Children
Organization Representative: Katharine Hewlett
Hometown: Starkville, Mississippi
Favorite Farmers: Floyd and Del Lowry
The Palmer Home for Children, in Columbus, Mississippi, relies on the generosity of others to provide for nearly 100 boys and girls between two campuses. I started working there earlier this year, and I just love being able to communicate the story of this organization to others. This year, local farmers, Floyd and Del Lowry, won America’s Farmers Grow Communities, and directed their donation to this worthwhile organization.
America’s Farmers Grow Communities gives eligible farmers the chance to win a $2,500 donation for their favorite local nonprofit organization. This year Mr. Lowry recognized the need for children to have access to agriculture in our community and directed his donations to The Palmer Home for Children.
We used the $2,500 to purchase a mini-tiller, garden tools and other supplies for its greenhouses. Our horticulture program at The Palmer Home for Children teaches children not only about agriculture, but also instills a disciplined work ethic and encourages proper money management. Every spring in Columbus, children at the Palmer Home sell the flowers they have grown. Every fall, poinsettias are planted to sell during the Holiday season.
The Palmer Home for Children strives to provide a stable, long-term, faith-centered home for children. This locally-directed donation will help provide them with opportunities that otherwise would not be available. Thank you Floyd and Del!
